School Information
Throughout the state, Oregonians take special pride in their outstanding local educational systems. Bay Area primary and secondary students are served by Coos Bay School District #9 and North Bend School District #13, both of which provide basic skills at the elementary level and college preparatory and vocational education at the secondary level.

The North Bend district provides one senior high, one junior high and five elementary schools for its nearly 2,700 students. The Coos Bay district's facilities, serving approximately 4,000 students, include one senior high - Marshfield High School, two middle and six elementary schools.

Well-coordinated programs provide students with strong basic skills and specialized training. Both school districts offer a broad range of interscholastic sports programs for both sexes.

The South Coast Education Service District, serving Coos and Curry Counties, offers public school districts and their students a variety of special programs and services.

Three private schools, with a combined enrollment of approximately 300, provide primary and secondary education. A variety of preschools and day care facilities are available for infants and toddlers of pre-kindergarten age.

Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC) is the area's higher education center serving Coos, Curry and Douglas Counties. Its 125-acre campus in a wooded area on Empire Lakes combines education in a safe environment with the pleasures of coastal living. Established in 1961, Southwestern was the first of Oregon's network of 17 community colleges, and continues to be a leader in the development of advanced and continuing educational opportunities. More than 11,000 unduplicated full- and part-time students attend each year.

In addition to first and second year college courses, Southwestern provides a variety of career programs, ranging in length from two weeks to two years. Specialized programs include manufacturing technology, professional aeronautics, pharmacy and environmental technology. Upper division courses are offered through extension programs of Linfield College, Southern Oregon University, Eastern Oregon University and Oregon State University.

Southwestern's Business Development Center provides business owners and prospective business people with a wide range of services and resources, including training, classes on management skills, and information and business research assistance.

The recently opened Newmark Center, a one-stop career and opportunity center, provides educational and social services. An adjacent Family Center provides classrooms for the College's Early Childhood Education and Family Studies program, campus daycare, and drop-in childcare for the One-Stop Career Center and childcare for JOBS participants. The college has also recently added a student housing complex and a new food service.

The University of Oregon Institute of Marine Biology occupies a 107-acre site in Charleston. The facility conducts research and offers courses in marine biology and related fields.
